Where Africa Meets The West
20 April 19:30 - Musaion
After the great sucess of "Champions of Song", thanks to you, our loyal supporters, we are proud to announce our next concert for the year: "Where Africa meets the West".
The concert juxtaposes the diversity and tapestry that is so uniquely South African. From the Western idiom of music by Hofmeyr, Temming, van der Watt and Barrett, to the authentic songs and dances of traditional Africa, this is one concert that is for all South Africans.
The Tuks Camerata is also privileged to host the international guest conductor, Prof Cameron LaBarr from the USA, and audience members will delight in his contribution to American songs.

SEND US TO SPAIN - DONATION FUNDRAISER
Every three years, 24 choirs across the globe are invited to participate in the world's largest international conference for choirs.
In July 2017, the 11th World Symposium on Choral Music will take place in Barcelona, Spain and our choir will represent not only our University and country, but the entire African Continent.
Tuks Camerata has an "all for one, one for all" policy and believe that such tours are for all choristers. We do not leave members behind as the Tuks Camerata is an organization for all students.
In order for us to make this trip a reality, we have launched the "Send us to Spain Campaign". Family, friends, alumni, companies, sponsors and all who believe in the power of choral singing can assist in getting us all there by donating to our tour fund.

The University of Pretoria Camerata will represent not only the University, but the country by competing in several categories.
We are proud to have this opportunity and look forward representing our beautiful nation at this choral festival.
The University of Pretoria will also represent our country at the 11th World Symposium on Choral Music in Spain, the world’s largest conference for choirs. Only 24 choirs across the globe are selected to perform for thousands of conductors, singers, composers and choral enthusiasts and Camerata has been selected to stand amongst the giants of choral music.
The cost of the tour is R31 350-00 per person.
Although the choir performs regularly and tries to alleviate the burden, the payment of the tour falls on each student. The members of the choir are responsible for the entire cost of the tour.
Many of our students are on full bursaries.
We would like to offer all our singers this opportunity and your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for 2016

Arnesen's 'Even when he is silent'
Why do we carry old shoes with us on stage?
In the Second World War, prisoners in concentration camps were forced to take off their shoes before they were marched to their death. To this day, heaps of old shoes serve as a reminder of the atrocities committed at the Auschwitz Concentration Camp.
One of these prisoners, in his last moments, wrote on the wall of a Death Chamber in Aushcwitz:
"I believe in the sun, even when it's not shining. I believe in Love, even when I feel it not. I believe in God, even when He is silent."
These chilling words were set to music in a composition by Kim Arnesen, and this piece forms part of the Tuks Camerata's 2016 repertoire. When we perform this piece, we honour the lives lost during this time of oppression, and the victory of Faith in those times.
See the Tuks Camerata perform Arnesen's 'Even When He Is Silent' at this year's Gala Concert, titled 'Love and War'.
Tickets at Computicket.
